Music has always been one of my main approaches in photography. Tiago invited me on a weekend to observe and register the ‘backstage’ of his work in a musica portuguesa a gostar dela própria. Portuguese music liking itself it’s an on going project of capturing audio and video of portuguese music in it’s context, whether in cities or on a mountain, inside a washing tank or on an abandoned mining complex. It takes us to the depth of lost villages, old people, ancient traditions in music, or just everyday scenarios, it is an extraordinary portrait of portuguese culture.
This two days travel, was to the festival of ‘cante’, a tradicional way of singing in Alentejo, in which the group of women / men sing in choir and sometimes walk as they sing, in a slow passe, creating a compass for their songs. Cante was oficially named in 2014 Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
